INCLUSIVE DESIGN

Inclusive Design for Survivors

Inclusive Design for Survivors is part of Picking Up The Pieces’ Culturally Inclusive Interior Design Solution Program. This program supports survivors of domestic violence and families rebuilding after crisis by creating home environments that feel safe, calming, functional, and dignity-centered. Through donated furniture, household essentials, trauma-informed design, and culturally responsive care, we help survivors begin again in spaces that support healing, stability, and long-term independence.

Why This Program Exists

For survivors of domestic violence, a new home can represent safety, freedom, and a fresh start — but it can also come with emotional, financial, and practical challenges. Many survivors leave unsafe situations with very little and must rebuild their homes while also rebuilding their sense of peace, control, and stability. This program helps create spaces that support healing, not just housing.

What We Provide

We provide trauma-informed home design support that includes furniture, beds, bedding, household essentials, and intentional room setup based on each survivor’s needs. Through a detailed intake process, we identify what feels safe, calming, and supportive while avoiding colors, items, or layouts that may feel triggering. When appropriate, we also help incorporate safety-focused items such as window and door sensors, safety ladders for upper-level homes, lighting, privacy coverings, and other supports that help survivors feel secure and in control of their space.

Who We Serve

We serve survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and families rebuilding after trauma or crisis. Priority is given to individuals and households transitioning into safe housing who need furniture, household goods, and supportive home design to begin again with stability and dignity.

Program Outcomes

This program helps survivors move into spaces that feel safe, personal, and within their control. A trauma-informed home environment can support emotional regulation, reduce feelings of overwhelm, and help restore a sense of peace after crisis. By creating rooms that are functional, calming, and reflective of each survivor’s needs, we help families rebuild confidence, establish new routines, and begin their next chapter with dignity and independence.
