Picking Up The Pieces ® was born from the experience of a single mother navigating the shelter system with a child. She understood that being homeless was challenging, but the ordeal became even more disheartening when entering an empty home. Picking Up The Pieces ® aims to alleviate this struggle by providing families with gently used and donated items, easing the transition from homelessness to housing. Our mission is to combat the challenges of homeless re-entry in Michigan, one home design at a time. Torn between paying bills and buying a bed, we strive to make this journey a bit easier for families in need."

I am the single mother mentioned in "our story," and my name is Shana. Now a mother of two beautiful children, I've spent nearly 13 years working in a professional medical environment. Despite my career, my true passion lies in helping people and my love for interior design. While I may not be a fancy interior designer, my mother's words have always resonated with me: "You're always making something out of nothing, Shana."

Throughout the years, I've dedicated my time to volunteering for numerous homeless shelters and organizations, becoming an integral part of my community. Helping families overcome the challenges of homeless reentry and rediscover a sense of "home" upon entering their doors has become my life's passion. I am committed to ensuring this transformation happens with every family I encounter.

At Picking Up The Pieces we encourage different perspectives. It allows us to see the world more clearly,  and with a clearer view, we can all see more and achieve more in the community. At Picking Up The  Pieces it is our priority and commitment to diversity, in all of its forms, is significant. We believe that  diversity includes appreciation and respect of differences in race and ethnicity, gender and sexual  orientation, religious affiliation, age, and life experience, nationally, language, physical capabilities, and  all the many forms of identity that shape our worldview. We are committed to diversity not only because  it helps us better serve the communities, but also because we believe it’s the right.

We expect each of us  no matter what our level, role, or function is to play an active role in creating environments where  people of a diverse range of backgrounds are excited to bring all of who they are and do their best work.

We aim to: Create and maintain a culture of inclusivity - Proactively seek initiatives of our diversity, equity, and inclusion committee -   Focus on working together to build and foster a truly diverse and inclusive environment in which every person feels valued, empowered, and heard - Maintain and grow the diversity of staff, board, and supporters - Adopt processes, procedures, and practices aimed at becoming a leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

We will do this by: Raise diversity, equity, and inclusion awareness through training, programs, partnerships, and activities - Meet with and encourage leadership to look to hire a more diverse staff - Create procedures for designers to follow to help be attentive to clients needs and sensitivities - Seek  feedback from staff, clients, and volunteers to understand opportunities for improvement - Annually, review and assess our performance
